School Education and Environment Improvement program
TNW thinks that the goal of creating a clean, green, healthy, carbon neutral and sustainable society is almost impossible without making the future generation (children) capable for sustainable positive change. The future is in the hands of the children. School is the place where they learn to shape their and community's future. But during the course of TNW's environmental education campaign at rural schools in Dolakha district, TNW found that the children do not have child friendly, secure and eco-friendly school environment. Therefore, TNW has come up with School Education and Environment Improvement Program. The program aims to improve the quality of school education and natural environment so that the children will have healthy, secure and resourceful school environment for better learning.

TNW's present initiatives
1) Saraswati Vidya Mandir
TNW Nepal is raising fund for the renovation of Saraswati Vidya Mandir. This primary school is located in Sunkhani VDC ward no 2, Dolakha district. This school runs classes up to five grades. This school is considered as the school of Thami children and the poor children. There are 103 students at the school. Most of the students (35 children) hail
from the Thami caste. Thami caste is considered as one of the socially oppressed castes in Nepal. Four children are from the Dalit community and the remaining 56 are from poor family backgrounds. Most of the students are from poor or socially discriminated backgrounds and some are orphans.

Till date, TNW has been able to raise 1500 USD with the help Society of University of Sussex Students Union,UK.TNW has raised more than 500 USD from its well wishers. The school has got very poor physical infrastructure which has deprived the school children to have an education at a good physical set up. The Students' Union has taken a responsibility to raise fund for the school renovation. We have also been distributing educational resources like pencils, notebooks, pens to 103 school children of this school.

2) Gaurishankar Secondary School
The School is located in Lamabagar VDC ward no 9 Jagat, Dolakha. This area is a gateway to Tsho Rolpa Glacial Lake or Rolwaling Trekking Area. This is soon going to be an entry point of Gaurishankar Conservation Area. Additionally, this area is one of the disaster prone areas due to the Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) as per the publication of ICIMOD.

The school is reached via a dangerous 30km bus journey from Charikot to Singati and then an 8 hour walk. This school was established in 2002.The school provides education to about 402 students from class one to class ten who live in four(4) nearby Village Development Committees(VDCs) benefits about the school children from 3200 households.

During the course of "School Environmental Education Campaign" at this school, Team for Nature and Wildlife (TNW) Nepal got surprised and shocked when it found the student children taking classes under the open sky on the school ground.

When we tried to find the reasons for classes under the open sky, we found that the school building is on a highly dilapidated state. Additionally, the school does not have extra space for the small kids to take class. This has caused the school children to attend the class under the open sky on the school ground. The class runs according to the weather. That means if it rains then there will be no classes. During the rainy season, the school does not run classes. On the other hand, this building is very close to collapse which has put the life of the school children at risk.
Recently, some students got injured with the fall of stones on head from the wall of the school building while taking classes. So, most of the students have also dropped the school due to the insecure school environment. Most importantly, the school environment does not offer favorable, safer or child friendly learning environment which is prerequisite for the healthy and creative minds and body of the school children.

Now, there is no toilet in working condition for the children. The Austrian NGO(Eco-Himal) has built the toilet but the toilet has been completely non functional due to the over full of safety tank. Mostly the school children go on nearby agricultural land for open defecation. They use green leaves and notebook's paper as a toilet paper. This has made especially the girl students to avoid the school. This is one of the factors in the country to increase the number of girl absenteeism.

The school children are reportedly found to have fallen ill due to poor sanitation and water borne diseases. If the children become sick due to worse school environment, the children will not have healthy mind and body that ultimately affects on their creativity and productivity. All these facts do not help in the creation of a developed and sustained society. Taking into consideration of all these facts, TNW has come up with the program of helping the school to improve its physical and natural environment for better school education of the marginalized children.

Request:
Till now, we have been able to raise nearly 30 percentage of the total cost with the help of TNW well wishers.TNW would like to request all of you to extend helping hands for the children who are the real guardian of this endangered planet.
